Protecting your reputation if you are under attack

Defamation & Privacy

We know that your reputation is very important and that it can be attacked in a simple post on social media containing false stories or the release of private information.

With social media and the internet, damaging and defamatory statements can circulate and grow unless strong and swift action is taken.

We regularly advise individuals looking to protect their reputation. We know this is an area of great sensitivity and will act quickly to protect your reputation.

What is defamation?

Defamation occurs when something is communicated which is untrue and causes, or is likely to cause, serious harm to the reputation of a person.

In certain cases, it may be possible to bring legal action against the author, editor or publisher of a statement.

The right to commence proceedings is limited by, and remedies set out in, the new Defamation and Malicious Publication (Scotland) Act 2021.
